Agentic AI

What it is

Agentic AI is AI that carries out multi-step tasks on its own — deciding what to do next and taking actions inside connected systems, rather than only generating output for a human to act on. What separates it from generative AI is the action layer.

Why it matters

For marketing, agentic AI closes the loop between decision and execution. Instead of a person choosing which of three drafted emails to send, the agent evaluates the recipient, chooses, sends, and moves the contact into the next sequence.

That removes the step where most marketing automation actually stalls. The bottleneck in a typical stack is rarely the writing — it is the human who has to review, approve and trigger each stage. Automating the decision, not just the drafting, is what changes throughput.

Basics

In practice, agentic AI is mostly supervised: the agent proposes and executes lower-risk actions autonomously while higher-risk actions still require human approval. Autonomy expands as a track record accumulates in specific use cases.

What an agent needs to work

Three things, and missing any one of them turns an agent into an expensive chatbot.

Access. It has to reach the systems where work happens — CRM, email platform, calendar, analytics. An agent that can only produce text is a generative tool with extra steps.

A decision rule. Someone has to define what “good” looks like and where the boundaries sit. Agents do not infer your risk tolerance.

A feedback signal. Without a way to see the outcome of what it did, an agent repeats its mistakes at machine speed. This is the piece most often skipped.

What this means for your marketing

Start where an error is cheap and reversible — internal routing, list hygiene, follow-up scheduling — and keep human approval on anything that reaches a customer with an offer or a commitment. Write the guardrails down before you turn anything on, because “use your judgement” is not an instruction a system can follow. Then expand the autonomous set deliberately, one task at a time, as each one earns it.
